Double bass player, composer Jānis RUBIKS studied at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music with Lynn Seaton (USA) and Taavo Remmel (Estonia). He has attended masterclasses with Victor Wooten, Dave Weckl, Jeff Andrews, Lenny White, Raul Midón, Peter Herman, Liudas Mockūnas, Peedu Kass, Dave Liebman, and Reggie Workman.
Former member of the Latvian Radio Big Band (LRBB), which has performed with Randy Bracker, Shayna Steele, Pierre Bertrand, Paloma Pradal, Minino Garay, and others, touring the USA, Germany, France, Lithuania, and Estonia. Rubiks has participated as composer and arranger in Arta Jēkabsone’s concert programme Atspulgi (Reflections), Beāte Zviedre’s project Džezs dzied Aspaziju (Jazz Sings Aspazija), LRBB programmes Goran Gora & Latvian Radio Big Band; Another Pauls. Ralfs Eilands and the Latvian Radio Big Band; From The Beatles to Ed Sheeran, as well as concert programme Classic Meets Jazz, among others.
In 2018, he earned the second place in the competition Riga Jazz Stage and the Nic Gotham prize. In 2019, he released the album Live in Salaspils. Rubiks has recorded with the LRBB, the band Jazzatomy, and Jolanta Gulbe-Paškeviča. Member of the Equanimity Trio. He has participated in the festivals Rīgas ritmi, Young Latvian Chamber Musicians for Saulkrasti, Saulkrasti Jazz, Winterfest, Baltic Breeze, Festival of the Centennial Nations' Capitals, Jazz Baltica 2018, and others.
