Latvian-born pianist and composer Vestard Shimkus is a 1st-prize-winner of one of the most prestigious international piano competitions – Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona (2009) as well as a 1st-prize-winner winner of Bad Kissingen KlavierOlympiade (2007).
He began to gain an international recognition after performances with BBC Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Czech Philharmonic, KREMERata Baltica, NDR Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg and Borodin Quartet.
Vestard Shimkus given concerts throughout Europe, USA, Middle-East, China and Japan. He has been invited to perform in
Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Rheingau Festival and Kissinger Sommer Festival, Bergen Festival, Gidon Kremer Festival in Lockenhaus and others.
Vestard has been awarded the Estonian order of White Star, and Polish Gold Order for his performances at concerts dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Fryderyk Chopin as well as the Latvian Grand Music Award for 2002 and 2009. In May 2014, Vestards Šimkus became the recipient of the LOTTO-Förderpreis of Rheingau Musik Festival 2014 (Germany).
Vestard Shimkus has composed two piano concertos and a number of piano works and chamber music works. Some of his compositions have been published by SCHOTT Music & Media.
Shimkus also plays jazz and has given several solo concerts consisting just of his spontaneous piano improvisations.
He has released eight CD albums.
