Conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius established a group of young musicians in 1988 and organized the first concert audience on January 30th, 1989. With the unfading energy, original programs, and great mastery the orchestra entered to Lithuanian cultural life and was named the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra on January 30, 1999. Celebrating ten years anniversary of creative work the orchestra played its first concert in the new 1000 seats Vilnius Congress Concert Hall, the largest metropolitan academic concert hall.
This team has developed its own traditions, whose essential features – unique thematic programmes, Lithuanian symphonic scores premieres, concert and stage opera performances. For Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra unique mission and exclusive event was to perform all symphonies by Mahler and Beethoven.
The orchestra’s intensive life is testified by impressive numbers of concerts. The orchestra played more than 1000 concerts in Lithuania and abroad. The LSSO has participated in prestigious festivals as the Warsaw Autumn, Europamusicale Munich, Chichester Festival a. o. Along with the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra regularly
performs world music stars such as Matti Salminen, Violeta Urmana, Davidas Geringas, Nikolai Lugansky, Alexander Kniazev, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Maxim Shostakovich, Aleksandr Vedernikov, Peter Donohoe a. o.
A rich repertoire of symphonic music supplements with the expressive stage works list. This team has produced and performed (in concert version and semi-staged) more than 15 operas. After cooperate with stage director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė Vilnius Congress Concert Hall built at least one new opera performance – Puccini’s La Boheme, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Massenet’s Werther, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci performance, in 2009 for the first time was built Sondheim’s musical Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber.
Youth, novelty, freshness, and the conductor’s charisma attracted the interest of a wider audience, and today one can see a great number of young couples, students, businesspeople, and teenagers here. The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra has become trendy. This is also thanks to the orchestra’s repertoire, which, alongside classical music, features the music of such rock bands as the Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, and Pink Floyd.
Every year the orchestra has concert tours in European countries.
The Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra pays considerable attention to its educational mission. Every year it builds up a wide-ranging repertoire, introduces exceptional programmes, and invites young talent to perform along with outstanding and recognized soloists. The youngest concert goers are thrilled by the orchestra’s special educational programmes for children with the participation of theatre actors and circus artistes.
