Roland Greutter, born in Linz, Austria, studied already during his schooldays with Sandor Vegh at the Salzburg Mozarteum. He then continued his studies at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and at Indiana University in Bloomington with Joseph Gingold. Greutter has won numerous competitions, including the Wieniawski Competition at the Juilliard School, the Artists International Competition in New York and the Mozart-Prize at the Mozarteum Salzburg.
Roland Greutter is a much sought-after soloist in Europe, America and Asia. Important successes he celebrated in recitals and as a soloist with leading orchestras under conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Myung-Whun Chung, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Michael Gielen, Alan Gilbert, Marek Janowski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Yutaka Sado and Günter Wand. These concerts have taken him to major concert halls such as the Carnegie Hall, the Bunka Kaykan Tokyo, the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, the Grosse Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Hamburg Laeiszhalle.
Roland Greutter is also a welcomed guest at renowned festivals such as the Marlboro Music Festival, the IMS Prussia Cove or the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, where he worked with Rudolf Serkin, Sandor Vegh, Leonard Bernstein and Lorin Maazel. Among his chamber music partners are Me Jin Moon, Christoph Eschenbach and Martin Grubinger.
The violinist made numerous radio, television and CD recordings. His unusually broad repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music. He played the world premiere of the violin concerto by Ulrich Leyendecker, which was dedicated to him and the violin concertos by Leonard Bernstein, Helmut Eder, Peter Ruzicka and Pēteris Vasks.
More recently, as with the Sinfonietta Cracovia, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra, Greutter takes over with great success the double function as soloist and musical director. In addition to his intensive performance activities he has led master classes worldwide.
Roland Greutter is first concertmaster of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg. He plays a fine violin by Dominicus Montagnana anno 1736, which was for 35 years taken care of by his friend and mentor, the legendary René Morel.
